Q: Percentage behind a firewall
Within the 500M sources we can access, there will be a percentage that can only be accessed behind a paywall. What’s the percentage that are free and those that require payment to access and download?

Apr 27, 2025A: Hi Sheldon, about 30% of the scientific literature is currently OpenAccess. According to most organizations between 38-50% of recent research is published as OA (Scopus, Deltathink). This varies by country and domain, but in general the trend has been towards more OA every year.
Patents are all openly accessible.
